Stockmann commits to the agreement on improving fire and building safety in Bangladesh

The Stockmann Group is committed to improving the Bangladesh factory safety and joined the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh in May 2013. The agreement aims at developing safe working conditions for textile workers by, for example, independent safety inspections and renovating factory buildings. The accord has been initiated by IndustriALL Global Union and UNI Global Union.

By signing the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, Stockmann is committed to having all of the factories producing garments for the Group audited on the basis of three different inspections: fire safety, electricity and structural issues. The structural inspection includes calculations on the load-bearing capacity of a building, which is something that cannot be inspected in audits made by BSCI or our internal audits.

The total number of factories covered by Accord inspections in Bangladesh is more than 1,100. All 34 factories producing for the Stockmann Group in Bangladesh have been visited and a total of 125 inspections were made in 2014. Eight inspections remain to be carried out in 2015.
